First, something really depressing: Cane toad hops into Bayswater Way too close to my house for comfort D: D: (the true horror of this may be lost to non-Australians)

And now a bunch of happy things from tumblr, which will be of no interest to anyone who is already subscribed to me there. I've linked to my posts since they have image descriptions.

Ug. I have no idea if there's anything I should be doing in advance of this cyclone except hope for the best. I guess tomorrow I go out and finally get around to putting the shovel in the shed? I can't see us getting flooding on the top of a hill in the north east of Perth but who knows. *catastrophises*

Also, wtf Egypt?
alias_sqbr: Asterix-like magnifying glass over Perth, Western Australia (australia 2)
I haven't said anything about the whole Queensland flooding thing since I didn't feel like I had anything very helpful to say, but I just scrolled through my tumblr and there was nothing about it and I thought about how any of my Queenslander friends (who still have the internet :( ) might feel if it seemed to be being ignored. EDIT: And then I totally forgot my fellow Western Australians in Canarvon, who've also had flooding!

So: Wow! Floods! Inland tsunamis, wtf! I hope you guys and your friends and families are all ok.

Mostly via my twitter, which is full of information on the subject since that's where the majority of my Aussie friends hang out:
Here is a link to donate
here is a video of a Toowoomba street turned into a swirling maelstrom
Here is a map showing how freaking huge the flooding is. Zoom out!.

I think mostly getting my news via rss loses some of the visceral quality of watching it on the tv, it didn't 100% hit me how huge this all is until seeing it on the tv today.

A page of links documenting the sudden fall of the local branch of gaming company Interzone

I know at least two people who were working there (this being Perth, and me being a geek, I'm sure there were more) The idea of the company running back to America with everyone's work to finish the game without paying them is..not good.

(Hat tip to various people on twitter who alo led me to computer programmer barbie)

1) Our web server is going down for a week to protest the $^%&$& internet filter omg. This is more Cam's protest than mine but I'm in favour of it and I thought anyone who might encounter the website should realise it's down on purpose.

2)I just finished Disk 1 of The First Australians. It's a sobering antidote to the view of history and colonialism in stuff like regency romances and Avatar. It's a bit slow, but the choice to tell the stories of individuals, as much as possible in their own words or from the POV of their descendents, and let the facts of history come up naturally when relevant rather than dryly telling the "overall" narrative from on high makes it very compelling. It's often very sad of course: so many leaders as brave and determined as any Braveheart whose works are thoughtlessly destroyed by the settlers and government. But they also make a point of telling the stories of the modern descendants who have overcome the odds to preserve and celebrate their culture (including Aboriginal Tasmanians, despite "common knowledge" being that they all died out) . I've been watching it in bits over a month or so while I sew.

I know this sort of thing normally goes on my dw but it's so specifically Australian I deiced it should go on the journal with more of an Australian readership.

Via [livejournal.com profile] patternsofchaos, Australian crime not soaring: report.

But as An Onymous Lefty points out(*) the comments consist almost entirely of people saying "Well then the numbers are wrong!". Guh. (I didn't notice because I find it's better to pretend news articles don't have comments, they're so reliably rage inducing)

A Dirty Pun Tweaks China’s Online Censors: in response to internet censors, chinese people create and share an "inoffensive children's song" about a "grass mud horse"..which uses puns to be (a)Obscene and (b)Criticise censorship

Here's the original video (as far as I can tell) *restrains self from making a comment about the gendered nature of the language* nb "harmony" is code for "censorship".

Here's another, from the article and I'll totally ignore the point of it to say it's very cute, and I found the chinese rap and animation interesting.

It's also really interesting to see how the Chinese Government uses cracking down on pornography as an excuse to censor everything. Not that any other governments would ever do that *cough*

12th PoC Carnival has some great stuff as usual

Fish-wives, Mr Premier? Colin Barnett is a sexist prat (I feel like I never talk about local stuff, so here you go :))

Doodling 'may help memory recall'

Mermaid dream comes true thanks to Weta

Also, reading through my twitter reminded me I forgot to go Eee eee a famous author responded to my review of her book! Plus there's another Steampunk suffragette. Which in turn makes me think of artists and art: I need better walls.

And now finish watching "Psych" (more mysteries!)

But doesn't this kinda invalidate this ?

EDIT: Not if the "original" aspects of the movie were stolen. Still, I would think the ABC article might at least mention the original short story.

In related news: "Speed racer" is a riot of colour, and I mean "riot" in the "violent smashing things" sense. Ow.
alias_sqbr: the symbol pi on a pretty background (Default)
I know this is old news (I saw a vague reference to this on a [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes discussion and googled it), but I just found it really bizarre seeing an ad actively promoting homophobia. I guess it hadn't really sunk in that that's what people were doing.

Yes on 8 TV Ad: Everything To Do With Schools
I imagine the others are just as bad but that was enough for me.

Am I the only heterosexual person who would have no problem with my kids reading gay fairytales? Then again, when I was a kid we used to play pretend at being lesbians(*) so, you know... :D

(*)I'm trying to think of a way to make this sound less weird, but in retrospect, it was pretty weird. Ironically, the only boy we let play is the only one of us who ended up actually being gay, afaict. See! No harm done!

Maths expert moves to save US death row inmate

If I were a highschool geometry teacher I would so totally be making use of this story :) (Of course if he fails to save the guy it's not such a good story. Here's wishing him luck)

So you know how I said West Wing totally stole the plot of the current election? Well the Chief of staff of Obama Santos was the cute(*) and unrealistically snarky Josh Lyman, who was a senior advisor to the previous democratic president. Josh was apparently based on the democratic politician Rahm Emanuel.

And now? Rahm Emanuel is Obama's chief of staff. You have to watch Rahm Emanuel reads a love letter, really, it's bizarre (ok, he's a bit more Jon Stewart than Josh Lyman, but still)

(*)At least to me :)

There's been a bunch of discussion about Prop 8 (to ban gay marriage) in California on my flist recently. Now, not being californian or even american it's not something I have much specific to say on but it got me thinking.

First, some links:Read more... )
And now some thoughts on abolishing gender )
alias_sqbr: the symbol pi on a pretty background (Default)
So it's pretty clear that the writers of West Wing season seven, lacking the guidance of original show-runner Aaron Sorkin, decided that the best way to come up with a plot was to use a time machine to view the future and copy that.(nb, my understanding of american politics and the plot of west wing are both pretty fuzzy, feel free to corect parts!) EDIT:via [livejournal.com profile] stephiepenguin, the new york times describes it better

Cut for spoilers, though reality has pretty much done that already )

ABC (no, not theirs, ours :)) has them: http://www.abc.net.au/news/

Obama made me cry a little (admittedly, this is not very hard)

And in unrelated news: chicken thighs? Also tasty in pasta sauce. And if anyone's coming tonight I made these oatmeal pumpkin cookies, they're not bad for healthy biscuits but I think next time I'll add walnuts and ginger (I am SUCH a sucker for american style sweet spiced pumpkin, so I've been trying to find a satisfying but relatively heathy way to eat it)

OMG OMG! Yay! *happy dance*

I mean, I know Obama, like Kevin Rudd, is just a politician, and there's going to be lots of compromises and backroom deals and random stupid crap (hello internet filter) But he doesn't totally suck. Which right now is more than enough to warm the cockles of my little heart :)

*no really, I am doing a little happy dance right now. Doopy doopy do*

EDIT:
President-elect Obama earned laughs from the crowd when he thanked his two young daughters.
"You have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House," he said.

So if he lost, they wouldn't have gotten a puppy? *imagines ads going "Vote for Obama or these adorable girls...miss out on a puppy!"* Not that he needed the help, as it turned out.
alias_sqbr: the symbol pi on a pretty background (Default)
We can't do it now of course, but in four years, if the american election is the same "day" as the Melbourne Cup again I think we(*) should go around and any time an internet conversation becomes over-run with election talk insist on talking about Melbourne Cup. Talk lots about how important it is that everyone bets, have flamewars about who will win, etc :)

Of course, I actually care a lot more about the American election than the Melbourne Cup, I couldn't name you a single horse that ran today let alone who won. But that's not the point :)

(n.b. I'm not complaining about americans who post on their own ljs or whatever. I'm mainly still bitter from like 4 years ago when the Brights forums got overrun with "All REAL atheists are voting for Kerry/Bush" crap even though most people there weren't even american EDIT: Two places where this happened to me this year: Example 1, Example 2)

See also today's Irregular Webcomic annotation, which reminded me of the idea.

(*)meaning we aussies, but you foreigners are welcome to as well :D

I keep meaning to do a proper post on this but am just too dumb (Mental age of 37, according to the DS, but I do not feel as clever as the 37 year olds I have known) So: Roundup of links on Aussie Net Censorship at Hoyden about Town (Lots of other people have posted about it, but they have a nice list of links)

Just..argh! Bad! Stupid government.

In happier news, I am currently watching Kyle XY. It is fun, in a slightly tacky teen soap opera sort of way.
