alias_sqbr: And yet all I can think is this will make for a great dreamwidth entry. (dreamwidth)

A while ago I was inspired by Liz Barr of Escapist Routes to make a newsletter, since that seemed like a possibly effective way to deal with the increasing fracturing of my social media circle. And then I got really self conscious about posting to or mentioning it. BUT NOW HERE I AM.

The newsletter: Sqbr's Miscellany

I'm still not entirely sure what I'll post to it yet, assuming I decide I like doing it at all. Probably a mix of not-too-personal life updates, links, and reviews.

Since you can't edit emails I'm going to write each post as a dreamwidth post at alias-sqbr.dreamwidth.org first, then wait until I'm sure I don't want to add any extra thoughts/fix any broken links etc, then post it to my Beehiiv newsletter. This will also leave the original dreamwidth post as a place I can add updates etc and people can leave replies, though if you don't have a dreamwidth account the comment will be anonymous and thus invisible/screened until I check it (this is a necessary spam measure, sorry)

From what I can see beehiiv is kind of annoying and spammishly corporate, but they're also free and unlike substack not, afaict, actively supporting nazis, so. If I find a host I like more I should be able to switch and keep all the subscribers, which is more than can be said for every other social media thingumy.

If you're a regular dreamwidth reader then there's really not much point signing up for the newsletter since I will be posting everything on dreamwidth first anyway, but I'm not the boss of you. (And yes it would be easier if everyone just signed up for and actually read dreamwidth but that is clearly not going to happen, so)

If you're a regular dreamwidth reader you also won't need to be told that updates will absolutely be sporadic and uneven as hell. Which is to say, fun random little surprises in your inbox, yay!

No pressure to sign up (or stay signed up) if you're not going to enjoy reading, and definitely don't feel like you have to read every post since I am guaranteed to have the occasional "20 reviews in a genre you're not into" etc. In the other direction feel free to sign up even if we don't actually know each other but you enjoy what I have to say.

Ok, introduction over, now to see how the "dreamwidth then beehiiv" system actually works in practice, and then draft a post with some CONTENT.

EDIT: ooh, nice, I can set this post to be where people are directed to read the post online. Less nice, there does not seem to be any way to post with html, but at least the rich text version of the dreamwidth post pasted over pretty easily.

Forgot to add a link to this post, oops. Luckily I don't have any subscribers yet.

While I'm adding extra thoughts post-posting: I'm not going to restrict readers/posts for this newsletter but there's the options to do that in the settings, which could be a useful way to post more private site-agnostic thoughts.
